Why See A Chiropractor?
Why see a chiropractor?
As you may have read I have just recently moved to McAllen to start a new practice in chiropractic. In my short time here it is becoming more obvious that most people aren’t sure of what to think about my profession. Most know that I do something with neck and back pain; still others haven’t a clue as to what I do. Well it’s true that I work with spinal care and treat people for neck and back pain, but in my scope of practice I am able to do much more.
First lets talk about what people already know about, spinal health care. Spinal health care includes neck and back pain resulting in local or radiating pain from the spine due to conditions such as sciatica, facet syndrome, disc protrusions or bulging disc, spinal arthritis, whiplash, muscle spasm, and scoliosis (to name a few). This type of health care also includes maintenance and preventative care. It is important, as in dentistry, to get regular adjustments to ensure proper biomechanics within the spine to prevent long term degeneration that will lead to more complicated / chronic conditions in our later years of life.
In addition to spinal health care, I am also able to help with other aches and pains in the body like shoulders, knees, writs, and elbows. My chiropractic office also incorporates massage therapists to help with muscle conditions, sprain / strains, and stress. Chiropractic offices normally include such modalities like ultrasound, e-stim, traction, and exercise equipment to aid in treatment as well. Typically we think of these therapies to be used when in an auto accident of other injury.
The last component to think about when thinking about a chiropractic office is wellness. This is the HARDEST type of practice to run, especially here in the Rio Grande Valley where most of us where taught to “walk it off”. This type of teaching had got mostly all of us thinking that if we can function okay then we must be okay. This is far from the truth. We need to think about the things we put in our bodies and what they are doing to us. As part of the wellness aspect of a practice, this would include supplements and detoxification programs or machines. We all here the stories of people getting cancer and getting sick from “natural” diseases but are we doing our part to prevent these diseases from happening. Most of us eat like ___, well you know and don’t think a thing of it. The biggest and quickest way to tell your aren’t eating the right things for most of us is a weight gain. And yes most of us have had that happen to us. We need to grasp the concept of wellness and start asking ourselves “what am I doing for myself these days”?

10 Ways to be Healthy and Feel Great!
1. Drink WATER!
This is probably the most important thing any person can do especially here in the Rio Grande Valley. Most of us dont consume the water our body needs to perform normal body function with ease. With the heat here in the Rio Grande Valley, it is that much more important. Remember, body temperature is another water related body function and a very important one in the RGV.
2. Take a Multi-Vitamin
Unfortunatley our eating habits have left our meals insufficient of the vitamins that we need. A good way to ensure you are getting those vitamins is by taking an easy digestable mutli-vitamin.
3. Eat More Vegetables and Fruits
Eating uncooked foods like vegetables and fruits give your body the highest quality of nutrional value that food has to offer. Steaming or cooking foods denature the foods content decreasing the amount of nutrional value you are eating.
4. Be An Early Bird
Getting up earlier in the moring will set the mood for the day. Giving yourself enough time to eat and get ready allows you to be more relaxed as you approach the upcoming day.
5. Meditate
This is another way to get those nasty tense moments out of your day. Take time to just sit in silence and not think about "what has to be done!". Meditation can also declutter your thoughts and make you more productive.
6. Get In The Sun
Sun light can act like a natural anti-depressant. By getting in the sun for 15-20 minutes a day your body produces hormones that act as natural anti-depressants.
7. Lay Off The Wrong Carbs!
While carbohydrates are important to our diets eating the wrong kind can leave you feeling slow and tired. Stay away from processed carbohydrates like bread and pasta. Try having more from fruits and vegetables - hey I should put that on this list somewhere.
8. Take Time To Stretch
Stretching does two things for those sitting at a desk. It gets you out of your normal body position getting those joints and muscles moving and also helps to deliver blood to those muscles giving you more oxygen for energy.
9. Talk A Walk
Walking 15 minutes a day gets your heart rate up and get that blood pumpin! This helps to move cell wastes out of your body and refreshing those inacitive muscles with nutrient and oxygen rich blood.
10 Get Sleep!
Getting enough sleep is very important to having both a healtheir and happier life. Not giving your body the rest it needs will cuase more that just half shut eyes. Body function is reduced and mental clarity is altered. Getting a good nights rest will help you keep moving forward like you want to.
Take these 10 easy ideas for bettering your health and feeling great and put them to the test. You'll be amazed at the little thing you do that have a big impact.

McAllen Chiropractor
First for this blog I'd like to give readers a little knowledge about myself. My name is Dr. Rey Rivera and I was born and raised in the RGV (Rio Grande Valley). I am married to a wonderful wife and have two children. I am a graduate from Sharyland High School and attende college at the Univeristy of Texas Pan American and South Texas College. I moved to Dallas in 2001 where I enrolled at Parker College of Chiropractic and recieved my Bachelor Degree of Science in Anatomy and Doctorate Degree in Chiropractic. I graduated from Parker College in 2004 and opened my first chiropractic practice in the DFW metroplex. In 2009 a move back to the RGV allowed me to open Archangel Clinic of Chiropractic and get get closer to family. I am loving the change back to my roots and hope to help as many people that I can with the gift of chiropractic.
With the need for change in our healthcare, I beleive that chiropractors are in line to help people change their lives when it comes to their health. Chiropractors are known for there "back pain and neck pain" healing abilities as working with the spine is where our roots are, however, chiropractic has come a long way and treatments within the office are amongs the most advanced you can recieve short of having surgery. In addition, most chiropractors incorporate supplements as means to treat patients along with body detox programs, weight loss programs, and support equipment. As a chiropractor in Mcallen, I hope to educate the general public about these other aspects of the chiropractic office and also show that chiropractic can be more that just "back pain and neck pain".
